John W. Hanback

May 10th, 1921 - February 27th, 2011

John William “Steve” Hanback, age 89, of Florence passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011. He was born May 10, 1921 in Wrights community, AL. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 2, 12:30-1:30 PM at Spry~Williams Funeral Home, Florence. The Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Williams officiating. Interment will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Mr. Hanback was a member of North Wood United Methodist Church and was a 50 year Mason. He was retired with 20 years of service from the U.S. Air Force having served in World War II and Korea. He was a Korean War POW for 37 months. He was a foundryman at Caterpillar Inc. in E. Peoria, IL, a USPS rural mail carrier/busline from Florence to Waterloo and was a farmer. Preceding him in death were his parents, John Riley and Beadie Mae Parrish Hanback; sisters, Stelar Mae Hanback, Dora Adell Smith, Mary Rebecca Hanback, Ava Nell Hanback & Docia Daniel Lindstrom; brother, Hugh L. Hanback. Survivors: Wife of 67 years, Della Mae Smith Hanback of Florence, AL. They were married May 6, 1943 in Lauderdale Co., AL. Daughter: Wanda M. Daniel of Florence, AL Granddaughters: Angela Daniel & Children, Ryan and Kelly Strickland of Valdosta, GA Christina (Wayne) Smith & children, Stephanie ,Collin and Carson Smith of Morton, IL Lisa (Glenn) Lindmark & children, Parker, Tess and Tori Lindmark of Cincinnati, OH Sister: Sara Elizabeth Eiland of Easley, SC Brother: Macon Samuel (Robbie) Hanback of Mishawaka, IN In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Wood United Methodist Church Building Fund or Florence Lauderdale Public Library.
