I met Peb’s granddaughter Stephanie in undergrad, and we became fast friends. The first time Steph took me to visit her grandparent’s house, Peb asked me about my grandparents. She didn’t like hearing that I have no relationship with any of them and claimed that I was her granddaughter now.
Over the next 17 years, she made it true. I had an open invitation to come by any time and was treated like family. She always had a warm smile and tight squeeze that she saved just for me. I quickly learned Peb showed her love with food. I spent a few Thanksgivings being practically force-fed until I burst. She always insisted you get no less than three plates of food. As I reflect on these memories, I’m filled with such love and am realizing that Peb’s insistence on making sure you’re fed is a physical representation of her love. Only after you’re so full that you couldn’t possibly take another bite, not even a single crumb from your plate, and you’ve sat back with a bulging belly and satisfied smile can you understand how much Peb loves you—full to bursting, but all the happier for it.
I love you, Pebbie. Thank you for making me your granddaughter. You shoved so much love in, I couldn’t possibly accept any more, and now I’ll carry it throughout my own life.
