I always enjoyed visiting the store and speaking with Mr. Glasscock. Last visit I made I was wearing a Rolling Stones shirt. He said ” pretty good band. If they stick together, they may make it someday “. Always willing to order anything that was not stock for you. Very nice gentleman and he will be missed by the Shoals community. His store was always a treat to visit and see the awesome pictures from our local music royalty. I will certainly miss seeing him while searching for those unique Christmas or birthday gifts.
Gordon’s mother and my mother became close friends through First United Methodist Church. We visited with Mrs. Glasscock many trips I came home to Florence from New York City (I was a regular commuter). When Gordon came back to Florence to take over the store, I would often stop by when I went downtown to the post office. He was an ambassador to downtown Florence and was loved by many. He had the most unique things in his store. I always enjoyed talking with him and walking around the music area. My neighbor, John Paul, had albums in the store. I bought my first one from Gordon. He always had great stories about the musicians and especially the ones who recorded at Fame Recording Studio. He was such a joy to talk with about all the latest and greatest things in downtown Florence. He married his lovely wife, and I enjoyed getting to know her. Then, she passed, and I called him once a month just to check on him. It is heartbreaking that he died so young, but he truly left a mark. We shared the University of Alabama although he was there much earlier than when I was. He had been a broadcasting major. May he rest in peace, and Roll Tide, Gordon. You will, indeed, be missed. My family and I send our sympathy and love to Don and his family.
