Jewell Sledge Johnson, age 99, passed away on August 23, 2024, in Enterprise, Alabama. Jewell was a cherished member of the community and beloved for her warm and creative spirit.

Jewell was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and graduated from Leighton High School near her home in Spring Valley.  She embarked on a distinguished career as a professional secretary. Her exceptional skills as a stenographer took her from offices in Dothan and Decatur, Alabama, and the Tennessee Valley Authority in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., during WWII, where she served high-level generals as an administrative assistant for the U.S. Government, Department of Defense.

An active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Florence, Alabama, Jewell lived a life marked by faith and fellowship. Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, and playing the piano, activities that reflected her love for beauty and nature.  She was always an advocate for higher education and supported the University of North Alabama.

Jewell is survived by her daughter, Jean Ann Johnson, and son-in-law Denver Sasser of Enterprise, AL; grandchildren Kevin Edwin Greene (Tessa) of St. Louis, MO, and Hillary Nicole Coats of Florence, AL; great-grandchildren Annsley Claire Coats, Mary Margaret Coats, and Thomas William Coats, all of Florence, AL. She also leaves behind nephews David and Ronnie McCaig, and niece Debbie Sledge. She was preceded in death by her son Robert Victor (Bob), Johnson; husband Victor J. Johnson; parents David G. Sledge and Elizabeth (Betty) Bozeman Sledge; sister Betty Ruth McCaig, and brother Doris W. Sledge.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 30, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Florence, AL, followed by a graveside service at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Matthew Jordan officiating.

Williams Funeral Home of Florence, AL, is assisting the family with arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Florence, AL.

    Tonight I learned of the death of my cousin Jewel Sledge Johnson. My grandmother was Bertie Sledge Cook and her eldest was John Sledge Cook my father. James Austin Cook was one of my father’s brothers. He took me to see Jewel at her home in the 1970’s. She was very gracious and showed me a picture of Caledonia Burnside our ancestor.
