Mary Jeanette
Thornton
January 2, 1933 - June 11, 2023
Mary Jeanette Cothran Thornton (“Jeanette”) was able to see the face of her Savior on Sunday, June 11th, 2023 after an extended illness in Trussville, Alabama.
She is survived by her son Raymond Clifford Thornton (April) as well as her daughter-in-law Debbie Parker Thornton. She is also survived by her treasured granddaughters Ansley Thornton Grammer (Casey) and Reagan Catherine Thornton as well as her great-grandson Cooper Edward Grammer. Jeanette is also survived by her sister Shirley Cothran McBrayer as well as nephews Brad McBrayer (Marsha) and Brian McBrayer along with great nephews and nieces.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years Charles Clifford Thornton (“Chuck”) as well as her son Marston Moses Thornton (“Marty”) along with her parents Ira Augustus Cothran (“Gus”) and Mary Elizabeth Fry Cothran (“Mary”).
During her 90 years of life, Jeanette maintained a faithful dedication to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She followed faithfully Jesus’ commandment to love others above yourself and always made others feel important. Even in her final months she showed a strength that can only come from the hope available to us all through the assurance of eternal life in heaven.
Jeanette was an amazing “Mimi” to her granddaughters who were her two greatest joys. She instilled in both Ansley and Reagan a sense of strength and servanthood that has allowed both to develop into amazing young women. Jeanette’s legacy will be felt for many years to come as a result of the amazing impact her granddaughters will have on this world.
Jeanette will be memorialized at Williams Funeral Home at 1950 Helton Drive, Florence, Alabama on Wednesday, June 14th at 2:00 PM local time. Visitation with family will begin at 1:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Casey Grammer, Doug Haynes, Bill Keller, George Lovelace, Lonnie Robinson and Jeff White.

I am so sorry for your loss . Jennette was a member of my Sunday School class . She loved the Lord . I will miss visiting with her at Legacy . Martha Jones and I visited with her and also brought her a little gift . The ladies in our class went in on the gifts . We had ladies that was at our church at Legacy . We would pray with them . My thoughts and prayers for the family .
Jeanette’s sister Shirley was my stepmother-in-law, but more like a mother than anything to me. She spoke often of Jeanette and loved her dearly. My prayers are with her and the rest of the family at this time. I can only say if Jeanette was anything like her sister Shirley she was pretty incredible.
A wonderful tribute to a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. I didn’t know Jeanette, but I know that her legacy lives on in her son, Ray. It has been well said that one’s obituary is being written every day by the life one leads and the legacy one leaves behind. Jeanette’s legacy lives on in her son, Ray. I pray that God grants her family and friends the “peace that passes understanding” as you go through this time of mourning. May Jeanette rest in peace as she meets her Savior and reunites with those who have gone before.
