Joan was born September 3, 1951, in Florence, Alabama. She was a 1969 graduate of Coffee High School where she was a cheerleader and member of the student council. Joan attended the University of North Alabama where she received her first degree in 1973, a Bachelor of Science. She worked in the medical lab for several years before returning to school to earn her Master of Arts in Education in 1992. Joan taught in the local school systems for approximately 20 years where she touched countless lives with her kindness, knowledge, and love. She then returned to the medical lab for several years after retirement from teaching to continue enriching the lives of others.
Joan, a devout Catholic, was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing tennis and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Many of her days were spent relaxing on Shoal Creek; she was an avid water skier and family reunion host. She loved her dogs and spending time with them at the land. After retirement, Joan and Chris were able to travel the world to locations including Israel, Alaska, Egypt, Germany, France, and Hawaii. While in Israel, she fulfilled her dream of floating in the Dead Sea, standing in the Jordan River, and visiting Jerusalem. Joan was a woman of faith and a devoted friend to everyone around her.

Joan was a dear friend and colleague when we taught at Sheffield High School. She was fully invested in striving to pull the very best from her students. Her family was the joy of her life!
Deepest condolences
Joan was indeed a sweet, kind friend. She always had a cheerful message for others. We spent quite a few nights in Bible study together at St Joseph as I grew to know her more closely and be influenced by her comforting nature. Her husband Chris and children, Dru and Roz were blessed to have her. Our prayers are with her family and friends. She truly made the world a better place.

I knew Joan for a short time but we were fast friends. I got to call her my next door neighbor- she was quick to compliment my family, offer a popsicle, invite us over for dinner or tea. She would bring us cut flowers from her rose bush and always had a sweet sentimental story to share. She was encouraging to me as I had young children and she her faith was influential. She and Chris had us over to the lake house and the creek- core memories for my children. For the short time we knew her, she (and Chris) was so warm to us and a forever friend to our family. I am so so glad to call her my friend- we even said she was like family. My son just recently mentioned that he had three set of grandparents- my parents, my husband’s parent, “and my other ones live in Alabama”. I will miss her dearly.
