Mary Emily
Miller

August 12, 1940 - March 20, 2021

Mary Emily Miller, age 80, of Florence, Alabama, passed away at her home on Saturday , March 20, 2021.  Visitation will be Friday, March 26 at Florence First United Methodist Church from 11:00-1:00 p.m. and service to follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dale Cohen officiating.  Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Rebecca Broadfoot; brothers, David Broadfoot; Floyd “Gary” Broadfoot, and sister, Carol Palmer; in-laws, Edgar Bryan and Barbara Miller.
Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 45 years, Edgar Bryan Miller, Jr.  Also, surviving are her children; David Hawkins (Tricia), Wesley Hawkins, Edgar (Trae) Bryan Miller III (Bobbie Sue), Jennifer Miller, and Robert Miller; brothers; Buddy Broadfoot (Rosie) and Mike Broadfoot; sister-in-law Barbara Ann Campbell; nine grandchildren, Victoria (Tori) Miller, Edgar Bryan (Tet) Miller IV (Emily), Joshua Gargis, Reed Hawkins, Drew Hawkins, Alexandra (Allie) Overby, Emily Hawkins, Ethan Miller and Catherine Miller; two great grandchildren, Drake Casey and Cypress Casey.
She was a graduate of Central High School. Mary ended up settling into a career with GMAC as an accountant. While she was never able to go to college, with hard work she worked herself up into an upper management position with GMAC. Always being organized and a good communicator Mary had a reputation of leaving sticky notes on peoples desk. When she later retired from GMAC as a joke they all gave her sticky notes as a retirement gift. Leaving GMAC was a smooth transition, she was able to focus on helping take care of her parents, grandchildren, and help in the community.
Mary was a member of the Alabama Master Gardeners.  She loved working with flowers, plants and gardening.  She and Bryan used to enjoy traveling to Master Gardener events and were very involved with community beautification projects.
She was also a very faithful member of the Florence First United Methodist Church.  She loved serving in the church and was always lending a hand with any needs in the church.  She loved helping and serving others. From a young age she was following Christ and wanting to serve Him. She knew in hard times she could always lean on God.
Mary was many things to many people.  Hard worker, always organizing, cleaning and accomplishing things.  She was also a loving and devoted wife, wonderful mom and even more wonderful Mimi.  She had a strong faith in God which revealed itself in everyday life.  Always with a kind word, sincere gesture or loving action.  She lived to serve others whether it was a simple phone call checking on someone or planning events.  It brought her much joy doing for others.  Mary always had a positive attitude and never had an unkind word to say about anyone.  She was always there to lift someone’s spirit, she brightened a room when she would come in and always had a smile on her face. Mary could be summed up with a phrase her daddy used to say “You’s a good woman”.
Mary was the keystone of the family; always bringing people together, loving on everyone and serving everyone.  She was exceptional at wanting to make strangers feel welcomed and included.  Love was one of her greatest attributes.  Her love was shown in so many ways; belief in others, serving others, and her unending kindness to others.
Even in her later years with her battle with Alzhiemer’s her spirit continued to be uplifting and she would always smile when you came in the room.  She would also sing many traditional hymns, as well as some children’s hymns, so you knew she continued to have Christ in her heart and spread Christ’s love even when it was difficult.  She was a wonderful example of a Christrian and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

  1. Mary was an amazingly kind and generous woman whose spirit will live on through those she held dear. I feel lucky to have known her— She welcomed me into the family warmly when I married her nephew. At family events she always greeted me with a hug, making sure to look me right in the eyes when we spoke as if to say “I see you and I’m glad you are here.” Her infectious smile will be something I always remember and try to emulate myself. We love you, Mary, and we’ll see you soon. My condolences to the rest of the family.

  2. I was especially close to my Aunt Mary. I am the same age as her son Robert. Growing up we spent so much time with her and Bryan, Robert and Wes and David. I always looked forward to trips up to visit them in Huntsville, we had the best time just being together. We went on many family trips with them including Opryland in Nashville, TN and Disney World in Florida. She was the sweetest lady and so very smart and kind. She was so accomplished and successful in life and really an amazing role model for me and everyone she encountered. Perhaps the thing I will remember most about her was how kind she was to everyone. I’ll never forget her love and warmth and laughter.

  3. Bryan, you have been so strong the last few years I know how hard it is to give her up! My prayers are with you now and just know you have many friends to help you through this. My love to you and your beautiful family.

  4. Bryan and family, I’m so sorry for your great loss. Mary was one of the kindest and sweetest people I’ve ever known, always so welcoming and gracious. The world is definitely a better place due to her good influence. She was indeed a good woman. Prayers for remembering all the good and for healing.
    Sincerely,
    Mike Alexander
