Clyde E
Gregg

January 20, 1932 - April 1, 2019

Retired Baptist Pastor, Clyde E. Gregg, went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2019.
Visitation will be Saturday April 6th from 11:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. at Spry Williams Funeral, Florence. The funeral service will follow at 1:oo p.m. in the funeral home chapel. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on January 20, 1932, to Walter and Sarah
(Mitchell) Gregg. He served his country in the United States Army during the
Korean War. He was very proud of his time in the service and talked about it with
everyone. When he returned from service he met and fell in love with Nancy Ann
Webster. They were married on November 22, 1956, and their union lasted over 62
years. On February 7, 1959, their first and only child, David E. Gregg was born.
Clyde worked as an Auto Mechanic for several years. The majority of those years
he worked for Vigo Dodge. He loved working on cars, trucks, and tractors.
In 1969, he and his family began attending church at the Landmark Missionary
Baptist Church. He had been led to the Lord by his mother when he was a child. He
was baptized at Landmark where he served as a deacon and later was licensed to
preach the Gospel, on February 10, 1971. Soon after, Clyde felt God tugging at his
heart to do mission work. His first work to lead out in was in West Terre Haute,
called Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. From this church, two other works
were organized.
On October 23, 1980, he became the pastor of the Berean Baptist Church, in
Dearborn Heights, Michigan. While pastoring in Michigan, he was very involved in
the State Baptist Association. He was also loved and appreciated by the pastors of
the state. After nearly 20 years at Berean, Clyde moved back to Terre Haute, and
started another mission work called New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
The years of of stress on his body and mind began to play havoc on his heath until
he decided to retire from pastoring. He and Nancy moved to Florence, Alabama, to
live near their son and family. There they joined the Florence Blvd. Baptist Church
where is son was pastor. There they became known as grandpa and grandma Gregg
to those at the church.
He voted for the first time in his life at our last presidential election. He voted for
Donald Trump and didn’t mind letting those around him know about it.
Clyde was a faithful husband for over 62 years. Nancy never questioned his love for
her. He took care of her in sickness and in health. They sang together, served
together, and loved together.
He was also the best father a child could ever ask for. He was my provider, protector,
corrector, instructor, and the greatest example I could ever have. I miss him greatly.
He was a loving Grandfather and Great Grandfather. He was a big cut up with them
and they all loved being around him. One of the big things he enjoyed was anything
related to Charlie Brown and Snoopy.
Clyde was proceeded in death by his parents Walter Howard Gregg and Sarah Ellen
Mitchell, his sister Sarah Miller, his brothers Sonny, James and Russell, and one
great grandchild.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, his son David and his wife Jackie, two
grandchildren Josh, and his wife Sarah, and Sarah and her husband Clay Davis, and
five great grandchildren, Noah, Hunter, and Taylor Gregg, Corban and Callie Davis.
He is also survived by numerous, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
To sum up my dad’s life I can say that my dad loved God, family, and country, in
that order. I will always remember his singing, laughter, smiles, and hugs and kisses.
Heaven is truly sounding sweeter.

  1. Clyde will be sorely missed. We enjoyed being in fellowship with him and Nancy while attending Florence Blvd. Nancy, David and Jackie, you have our deepest sympathy and we will be praying for God’s comfort in your time of grief. But, it is just amazing that Clyde is with Jesus and singing as never before.
