Martha Jean Smith Barnett, age 77, of Florence, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on December 19, 2019.   The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 21, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home. The funeral will be at Killen United Methodist Church in the Family Life Center on Sunday, December 22, at 1:30 p.m., with Brother Bryan McIntyre officiating. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.

Martha was a substitute teacher at Brooks High School. She later worked as a hairdresser before returning to the Lauderdale County School System as a cosmetology teacher at Allen Thornton Vocational School.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Kenneth Troy Barnett; parents, Horton and Alene Smith; and brothers, Eddie, Jamie, Tommy and Richard Smith.

Survivors include her sons, Ken (Carrie) Barnett, Max (Whitney) Barnett and Lane (Lana) Barnett; grandchildren, Brady, Lawson and Lauren Barnett; great-grandchild, Blakely; and sister, Joan Jones.

Martha loved her church and singing in the choir, but most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren.   She was an avid supporter of any activities in which they were involved and of UNA athletics.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lyman & Kay Mitchell, and the caretakers of North Alabama Medical Center and Florence Rehab for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mr. K. Troy Barnett University of Alabama Alumni Scholarship Fund, 250 McGough Blvd., Florence, AL 35630, or the Killen United Methodist Church Building Fund.

  2. I’m so sorry to hear about Mrs. B. I had the great honor to have her my teacher at Allen Thornton for two years. I loved her dearly she was a wonderful woman and role model. I so grateful to have had the chance to know her. She was the best. My heart goes out to you all I know you have lost a wonderful woman. I loved her very much. Rest In Peace Mrs. B.

  3. My prayers are with the family of Mrs. Barnett. She was an amazing women. She was my cosmetology teacher for 2 years at Allen Thorton. Mrs. Barnett was our teacher when we needed a teacher but most of all she was our friend when us girls needed a friend. I will miss her dearly.

    I am so sorry to learn of Martha’s passing. She was a precious person and as her neighbor I can concur, she was crazy about her family. She loved her boys and was so proud of each one. She was such a beaming, loving grandmother. She would look forward to the visits and overnight stays at her and Troy’s loving home. I am so sorry for your loss but also know how blessed you all were for such a wonderful mother, grandmother. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

  6. I was so upset to hear about Mrs. Barnett’s passing. She was such a blessing to care for while at NAMC. Such a joy and always would put a smile on my face. My favorite memory was her and her sons walking the halls. May they find peace knowing how well they cared for her. Much love and you guys are in MJ prayers.

  9. So sorry to hear of the passing of Ms Martha. She and Troy were special people that we always enjoyed seeing at the state basketball tournament. She was always so supportive of her sons in their sports careers at Brooks. You could just see the love of family that she and Troy possessed. You have our sincere sympathy.

  10. We were all so saddened to learn of Martha’s death. I didn’t know that she was sick or would certainly have been visiting her. She was a precious, special lady and I know losing her has left holes in your hearts. But the most important thing to hold on to – we know where she is! You will be in our prayers. The Sparks family

  11. We were sad to hear of Martha’s passing. We did not know of her illness and but realized how much she must have missed Troy. Mr. Stewart was not able to come to funeral home but we both wanted you to know how much we cared. Our thoughts will be with your family.
