Walter Edward
Monroe, III

July 19, 1941 - May 30, 2021

On Sunday, May 30th, 2021, Walter Edward “Eddy” Monroe III, loving husband, father of two children, 8 grand-children, and two great-grand-children, passed away at the age of 79.

Eddy was born on July 19th, 1941 in Corinth, Mississippi to Walter Ed and Pat (Gatlin) Monroe. He was a 1959 graduate of Deshler High School and a 1974 graduate of the University of North Alabama. On June 1st, 1963, he married Barbara (Braswell) Monroe. Eddy spent most of his life working in the automotive industry, retiring from both, Ford Motor Company and General Motor.

Eddy was a man of integrity, a man that listened to others and hesitated to give unwarranted opinions. He loved to read, especially about history. Eddy loved his country because it offered him the freedom and opportunity to achieve success if he was willing to put forth the effort to do so. He loved his family and spent his life sharing his time with them. He passed down his wanderlust to his children and grandchildren, taking them to every part of this beautiful country, spending weeks in a car during the summer, listening to John Denver songs. Finally, Eddy was a man of faith. He raised his family to believe in God. He was an elder at Shoals church of Christ for years, and spent his time visiting members and visitors of the congregation. He offered encouragement, condolences, or just a smiling face when needed. It was important to him that his family knew their life on Earth is fleeting but life in heaven is eternal and that heaven is not easily attained. He opened our eyes, so that God could open our hearts.

Eddy was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Ed and Pat Monroe; his grandson, Benjamin Monroe Sandy; brother-in-law, John Sherrod.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Monroe; 2 children, Rebecca Monroe Sandy (Will) and Steven Monroe (Amanda); sister, Emily Sherrod; brother-in-law, Roy Braswell (Vicki); 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Family will receive friends, Saturday, June 5th, from 10:00 till 12:00 pm at Williams Funeral Home in Florence, followed by a Celebration of Life.

  1. Barbara, I am so sorry to hear of the death of Eddy. I cherished the time we worked together at Ford Motor Co. I enjoyed all the times we talked Bible. It was everyday at work. He helped me to grow as a young Christian. Eddy was a tremendous man. I have a 11 AM wedding that I will be conducting Saturday morning and I am so sorry I can’t come by and see you and family. I know God’s comfort will surround you.
