April 27, 1935 - January 21, 2025

Betty Dell Swaim-Vines, 89, a beloved mother to five children of Florence, AL, passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with dementia on January 21, 2025, leaving a family that loved her. 

She was born in Cherokee, AL in 1935 to Sam and Eva Swaim.  She was married to Luther Daniel Vines, Sr. in May of 1953 and they were married for 43 years.   

Betty was a devoted mother to Wanda, Norma, Danny, Kathy and Sammy.  She was a great mother to all of them.  She made their house a home, was a gardener, a great cook, seamstress, accountant, chauffer when needed, and was a Christian who loved Jesus and made sure her kids went to church. She was a peacemaker who did not like to argue.  

Betty and L.D. took special joy in raising and showing bantam chickens.  They loved traveling to chicken shows all over the Southeast.   

Betty was preceded in death by parents, Sam and Eva Swaim; husband, Luther D. Vines, Sr.; daughters, Wanda Vines, Norma McCollum; brother, Lunie Swaim; sisters, Sue Inman, Jean McNeal, Peggy Weatherby; and granddaughter, Rebecca Haddock.

She is survived by sisters Jane Black, Polly Robinson (Jack); sons, Luther Danny Vines, Jr. (Sharon), Samuel Vines (Christine); and daughter, Kathy Vines who will never forget the love she brought to their lives. She has 12 grandchildren, 18 greatgrandchildren and 1 greatgreatgrandchildA special thank you to her caregivers, Sharon Cromwell-Vines, Brenda Cromwell-Kelley, and Shirley Cromwell-BalentineMany laughs and good times were shared with these three special ladies and Granny Betty!  She loved and considered Sharon her daughter. 

Serving as pallbearers are Zackary Vines, Chuck Joiner, Brandon Haddock, Daniel Haddock, Max Perkins, Stephen Joiner

Special thanks to Hospice workers Katlyn Peters, Renea Jones, Chaplin Garry Lovette.  

Her visitation will be Sunday, January 26, from 12 – 2 pm at Williams Funeral Home, 1950 Helton Drive, Florence. Her funeral service will be Sunday at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel, with Chaplain Garry Lovette and Minister Greg Pollock officiating.  Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Cherokee, AL.
