Stephen Lee Darwin, age 58, of Florence Alabama, passed away on August 18, 2025. Stephen was a devoted husband, a loving father, a faithful Christian, and a cherished friend to many.
There will be a Celebration of Life held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ, 1207 Sherrod Ave, Florence, AL 35630, at 3:00 pm, with Justin Pannell and Ed Gallagher officiating. A private interment will be held with only family in attendance at Greenview Memorial Gardens as were Stephen’s wishes.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents: Robert Thomas and Ruby Devers Darwin; and his grandfather William Columbus Jumper and his grandmother Ruby Thrasher Jumper.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Tara Swindle Darwin. He is also survived by his parents, Lee and Darnell Darwin; three children: Sara Darwin O’Steen (Glenn), Alex Darwin (Riley), and Taylor Darwin and one sister, Susan Darwin Atencio (Chris). He dearly loved his nieces and nephews: Jason Atencio (Chelsea) and Stephanie Atencio Whitten (Michael), as well as the entire Swindle family, whom he considered his own.
His happiest moments were spent in the woods, whether hunting or simply enjoying the peace of nature. For over 30 years, he poured his heart into countless students and athletes across the schools where he taught and coached. Known for his tough but fair approach, Stephen combined discipline with a down-to-earth personality, a sharp sense of humor, and a remarkable ability to see the best in everyone. A man of integrity with a heart firmly rooted in faith, he touched lives in ways that will be felt for generations.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Clearview Cancer Institute of Florence, Dr. Reid Melson, and Hospice of North Alabama.

Stephen was like a son to Sarah and me. It was my honor to join them in matrimony at Wilson Park in Florence.

I am so blessed to have met Stephen. We had some great small group studies at the Darwin’s and he and Tara became my friends. We will meet Stephen again in heaven some day and he will be so happy without pain. God be with you during this time.
