George Stanley Perkins, Jr.

September 17, 1946 – November 2, 2026

George was the son of Stanley and Lucille (née Glasscock) Perkins. He joined the family with three older sisters: Virginia, Myra and Elaine.

George loved to tell stories of his childhood. He grew up on Mud Road where his neighbors, “the Guthrie boys” included him in their backyard sports. Thus began his love of sports.

He attended school at Central. In High School, he excelled in multiple sports. He was inducted into the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. After graduation from Central High School, he attended Florence State (now the University of North Alabama) on a football scholarship. His years at Florence State were interrupted by the war in Vietnam. He joined the United States Air Force. He served in Vietnam during 1970 – 1971. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his military service ended, he again enrolled at Florence State. During his last years in college, he joined the cheerleading squad. He enjoyed traveling to games with the teams. George also pledged Sigma Chi and made many lifelong friends. He acquired a BS in Accounting. Later, he returned to get his Teacher’s Certificate. He received a Master’s Degree from Florence State and a PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS. He taught at Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA. He returned home and taught at Rogers and Wilson High Schools and coached and taught at Central and Brooks High Schools. He retired in 2011.

He was an avid sailor, hiker, and lover of the outdoors. At age 30, he learned to play the guitar. This truly changed his life. The Monday Night Choir Practices were happy times and brought him many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Virginia Phillips and Myra Brown; brother- in-law, Buddy Poorman; goddaughter Avery Heupal also predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife, June Thomas Perkins; step-sons: Seth (Amber) and Eric (Ann) Crews; step-grandchildren: Jackson, Gavin, Eston, and Ayla Crews; daughter, Leah Burchfield and family; beloved sister, Elaine Poorman; brother-in-law, Shannon Phillips; nephews: Kevin (Nancy) Phillips, Shan (Monica) Phillips; nieces: Pam (Dave) Ely, Dana (Bob) Phelps, Gwen (Kelly) Cheatham, Joy (Dave) Kelly, and Natalie Chanin. Also surviving are special great nephews/nieces and their families, and goddaughters Raleigh Hart Williams and Greer Hart McCormick, and his little buddy, Joe.

George will be remembered as a kind and simple man. His wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread on the Perkins homeplace. He desired no formal service.

Special thanks to Dr. Tim Ashley and staff for years of kindness and Gentiva Hospice Staff, especially Jessica, Steven, Emma, Gloria, and Jeff.

Remembrances may be made to Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund, c/o DeeDee Flippo, 720 County Road 253, Florence AL 35633, or a charity of your choice.

  1. George,
It’s so hard to imagine this world without you walking this earth, as you so loved to do, mile after mile, state following state.
It’s so hard to imagine Rhodesville without your smile and your guitar, a song in your heart and an open door at your home.
It’s even harder to know that our Monday night CIRCLE OF MUSIC, without you in the center, is in the past.
You welcomed me, but initially were weary of my loud voice and guitar. I toned it down for you; however, the friendship blossomed.
Heaven is a better place now that you are there…I will miss you greatly.
