  9. From reading previous comments, it touched my soul to realize how many people’s lives Dr. Kim influenced. To know Dr. Kim was to admire and respect his compassion, work ethic, and knowledge. I owe my same career goals to Dr. Kim because he instilled in me years prior the importance of great patient care. Dr. Kim wasn’t only the nicest person/doctor you’d ever meet, but he had some jokes that would make your side hurt! My deepest condolences to his precious family and the many friends and coworkers that will forever cherish his memories. ❤️

  10. Dr. Kim has been my eye doctor for several years. Thank you for being a wonderful person and a great man. I will never forget all the great talks that we had about our daughters every time I would come in the office over the years. I will miss you greatly. You are a blessing to so many.

    1. Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Kim family in your time of extreme grief. Wonsuck was a very precious person, quick with a smile, and quicker in showing his love for and pride in his family. A great guy and cherished soul. We send our condolences, will keep you in our thoughts, and his memory in our hearts.

  11. So very sad to hear of Won’s passing. I will always remember him as a kind and measured man; I have no doubt his patients loved him for his calm, reassuring demeanor, and his disarming smile. He will be missed by many, taken too soon by a disease that has seemed in my experience to steal from us the very best and the brightest.

  12. We are so sorry for your loss. We are praying for God’s peace and comfort for your family.

  13. It’s with sadness to hear of Dr Kims passing. I was talking with a friend just yesterday about his kind nature and I’d missed seeing him on my last visit a few weeks ago. Dr Kim will be greatly missed. He was a kind and compassionate man who loved each of his patients. Each time I saw him I knew he really cared and was concerned about the problems I had with my eyes. He listened to his patients and always explained treatment in a way that you knew he cared that it would help you get better. May God bless and comfort his family and his coworkers as only He can. Dr Kim, you were a wonderful doctor and will be missed indeed.

  15. Mrs. Kim , daughter and extended family,
It is with great sadness that I am signing the guestbook of Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim has been my opthalmologist for many years. I always enjoyed my visits with him because I always knew he was a caring and dedicated doctor for all his patients. He was always so kind and listened to your concerns and made you feel like you were the most important patient he had. Not only was he concerned about your eye health he would also inquire about your family. I always enjoyed seeing the beautiful pictures of his wife and daughter that were hanging in his treatment rooms. You could tell he really love them very much and how proud he was of them by sharing the pictures with his patients. I was not able to see Dr. Kim at my last appointment due to him being out on medical leave and I missed that. He was a kind and caring man/physician and he will be greatly missed by his patients, coworkers, many friends and especially by his family. May God’s loving arms surround each of you with his love, peace grace and comfort be felt by all who knew Dr. Kim. God Bless and Keep you in his watch care in the days, weeks and months ahead.

  16. Dr Kim was a wonderful Dr that helped do many people including my mom. Sad that this cancer has no cure. Prayers for his family members !!

  17. Dr Kim did eye surgery on my Mom twice he was so kind to her like she was his mom and that made my heart warm lm praying for his wife and family I am glad I got chance to meet such a nice person (RIP) my friend.

  18. Won attended the IAHS Class of 1979 Reunion in Indiana, PA. For those that attended, we were blessed to have seen Won that fall of 2019. This was a two day event and typical Won made time to go visit the parents that impacted his life. Me and my class mates could write a book filled with “Wonsuck” stories that embodied his humor and passions for Church, music, and sports (mostly baseball).

We love you Won! God bless you and your family.

  19. One of the best person that I have even met. I’m deeply saddened that he is gone but he is in heaven.

  20. This is a loss for the community. Wan was a good humored, bright, caring ophthalmologist. He will be missed.

  21. Dr. Kim was a kind and compassionate doctor who took great care of his patients I will always remember him he will be missed Sorry for this loss

  22. Dr. Kim was the kindest and most caring physician that I have ever known. I miss him greatly.

  23. Dr. Kim will be missed, my prayers for his wife and daughter. I worked with him 20 years ago and when I returned over 10 years later he remembered me immediately at a professional meeting. He always cared so much for his patients and worked so hard to give them the best care. I will always remember his humor and compassion.

  24. Dr. Kim was a compassionate and excellent doctor. He did cataract surgery on me and I saw him as my ophthalmologist. I send prayers to the family and praying you will be comforted by God as you go through the days ahead.

  25. To the family of Dr. Kim.
My mother was one of his first patients when he came to Florence. Soon thereafter, I became one of his patients. He was so medically wise in more than his profession. Diagnosed and helped in my mother’s Myasthenia Gravis disease treatment in 1993. His warm heart and calmness was so appreciated. In later years we got to share many happy events at Randolph School where is daughter and my grandson attended. He was a friend to so many of us and will be greatly missed. May his family know he was loved by so many. May he Rest In Peace.

  26. To the family of Dr Kim,
You and your family are in my thoughts & prayers during this time, I began seeing Dr Kim in 2008 and knew I was in great hands with my health. He was a very kind and compassionate physician and my family and I are very happy he was able to have me as a patient of his.

  27. Dr. Kim was my parents, my late husband, and my ophthalmologist. He did my cataract surgery last January and I’m so thankful he was able to do it. My husband passed away from pancreatic cancer 11 years ago. I have prayed for him and his family as I understand this terrible disease. God bless you all.

  28. I have read so many of the tributes for Dr. Kim. All of them written with respect, love and admiration. Dr. Kim was one of the “good guys” in medicine. He was caring, compassionate, and loved his family and patients. Thank you to his wife and daughter for sharing him with all of us patients. We will miss his expertise, but most of all that infectious smile and generous spirit. God bless you all.

  29. Dr Kim miss you. The best. Worked with him at the surgery center. . Never a dull moment. Bless his family. Heaven has a angel

  30. Dr. Kim. This man is not only my eye doctor for years but he was my friend , like a family member of sorts. He called me meanness and we would both laugh, I called him meaner than I was. I love him with my whole heart. We talked over the years about family friends and way too many jokes that I laughed so hard at that he would have to wait on my tears to go away to finish my exam. Prayers for his beautiful wife and daughter and their families during this time. Just know there may be another man out their who might come close but their will never be one I think so highly of. RIP Dr. Kim, I hope to see you when my time comes, love you big buddy.

  31. The shoals area lost a great Dr. I loved Dr. Kim, he had a good bedside manner and was a great eye surgeon. He did cancer surgery on my eye. He was so careful not to hurt me. I looked forward to seeing him. To all his family I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers!

  32. Dr. Kim saved my husband’s eyesight! He was with us until the end of my husband’s life. I also became a patient. I can’t tell you how many times we shared the events of his family and the wonderful vacations he and his family took to my little corner of the world. We always chatted about the special places to stay, restaurants not to be missed, and the ski slopes to experience!!! I hope his family continues to frequent those special places and treasure the many family memories they shared. He was so proud of his wife and daughter. It is with great difficulty and many tears that I write this note. Dr. Kim was the same age of my oldest son! I will always feel he was one of my family–he accepted being ‘adopted’ by me! I truly want his family to know how much he was loved by myself and my husband!
May God protect and comfort you as you go through this time.

  33. We’ve lost one of the world’s kindest souls. For as long as I knew him (we were in elementary school together), he always made time for everyone he came into contact with, really listening, engaging and caring. Others have similar stories, but on one of his trips back to Indiana PA he and his wife made the effort to visit my mom. She (and I) were so appreciative. Much love to all of Won’s family. I hope you will take some comfort in knowing how many lives he touched in such a meaningful way.

  34. Like Joe, Lynn, and Rocky, having Won in our lives if only for are earlier years was a gift filled with awesome memories. Knowing that he is no longer amongst us in the flesh is a hard reality to imagine; Knowing his spirit is amongst those that guides us, comforting. From me, my mother and family, our hearts go out to Soo Mee, Ji Soo, his parents, and family.

  35. I first met Wonsuck as an elementary school classmate in Indiana, PA shortly after his family moved to the US. He later was my lab partner in 9th grade Biology. It was tough for me, yet he was kind and helpful and helped me get through a challenging year. He traveled back for almost every class reunion and everyone has fond memories of their time with him. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and patients.

  36. Dr. Kim was my dad’s eye doctor. He was always so nice & patient. We saw that same compassion when he told us my sweet granddaughter was blind. I pray a peace of mind for his family in knowing to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. God bless you all!

  37. Dr. Kim will be missed by so many people in the Shoals area.Like all have said,he was the most kind and caring person.
Loved looking forward to seeing him. Praying for all the family.

  38. We are very saddened to hear about the passing of Wonsuck. He always seemed to have such a calmness and maturity about him. We know he meant the world to his family and will greatly missed.

  39. Just learned the sad news today from a fellow high school graduate of Wonsuck’s passing. Heartfelt condolences to his family, He was a friendly and kind soul who I had the pleasure of knowing through church and high school in Pennsylvania. As a fellow member of the medical profession , I’m certain he will be sorely missed by those he cared for in his practice ,

  40. The community has lost a fantastic Doctor, Mentor and friend to all he met .
I will always remember his quick wit, his smile and the genuine caring manner he had for his patients.
We met when I worked for Valley Eye and my respect for him was forged there.
    God Speed Dr. KIM
    Robin Henry

  41. So very sorry he was my parents eye doctor for years. Saved my dads eyesight. Prayers for his family

  42. What can I say about an amazing man. He loved his work but more importantly, He adored his wife and daughter. On my last visit with him we were able to have a friend to friend conversation about family , life and future. His eyes would light up talking about his family. You could tell that even though he loved his work . He loved his family more. You will surely have an empty place but remember his love, joy and laughter. Bless you all

  43. Farewell to such a fine colleague and friend. He was an excellent ophthalmologist and a true physician. His sense of humor was superb – on at least one occasion, sitting next to Won at an ophthalmic meeting, he leaned over and whispered something so funny that I was called out by the speaker for laughing uncontrollably. Meetings will not be the same without him. Won was respected throughout the ophthalmic community for his dedication to his patients and to his devotion of after-hours time to leadership roles. He will be greatly missed.

  44. My heart is broken 💔 . Dr. Kim sent me to Huntsville to get my face fixed from a stroke that covered my eye. I was grateful for him. He was a great man. I was sitting in the chair on 1 visit and he asked me where I got my shoes that his girl would love them. Great memories I will carry with me. RIP Dr. Kim.

  45. I am saddened to learn of Dr. Kim’s passing. I was so grateful for the referral to him when I moved back to Florence. He was always encouraging and careful in explaining all options and timing regarding cataract surgery. I knew that I could trust him completely when it was time to go ahead with the surgery and he was expressed confidence that all would go well. A wonderful caring Dr. who enjoyed making his patients laugh and relax in his office. He will be greatly missed in the community. Prayers being lifted to the Lord for his family, patients , friends, and co-workers.

  46. I had the great fortune to meet Won through his work advocating for quality eye care for patients. His words were always humbly spoken, but with passion, careful thought and great wisdom. He truly has touched and impacted so many lives.

  47. It was so beautiful reading the comments here from others, I hope hiis family can take comfort in knowing what a wonderful person he was . I also was his patient for a long time & always felt the love & concern this Dr. showed to me & my husband Tom . I doubt I will ever find a dr. that cared more than Dr. Kim . i miss him so much .

  48. Won was a great physician, and I’m proud to have known him as a colleague. We served on an American Academy of Ophthalmology committee together, and I always appreciated his ideas and commitment. He always worked with a sense of joy, and a duty to his patients. He made great contributions to our field, and he will be missed, but not forgotten. May his memory be eternal.

  49. My deepest sympathies. I first met Won when he was associated with Dr. Taft and was my client some 30 years or so ago. I then became his client. A great loss for us all. I can’t add any more praise to what’s already been posted. Heaven has added a great physician.

  50. Sincere condolences to the family Dr Kim loved dearly. During my exam visits he always shared his enjoyable moments with them. He was an exceptional doctor and fine gentleman.
May God give the family strength and reminders of the good times.

  51. Won and his family are neighbors of ours, and my husband and I always looked forward to seeing him out walking Max. We relished in the chance to hang out with this engaging, funny guy who was so filled with warmth. It made our day.

Heartfelt condolences to your family. Won was indeed an amazing human being.

  52. Won was an amazing person and physician. He was an inspiration to all of us (ophthalmologists and beyond). We all wish we had more time to share with him. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

  53. Wow,Dr.Kim was my eye doctor ,he was such a nice man.He was so proud of his daughter,I would always ask about her.The ladt time I talked to him he said he was taking his daughter and wife to Korea cause his daughter had never been and he wanted to show her how her how beautiful it was.My sincere prayers of Sympathy for his family. He was a great man

  54. It was with great sorrow that I learned of the passing of Dr. Kim. My mother was his patient, and he always treated her with kindness, cheerfulness and respect. What a wonderful doctor and human being. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

  55. After reviewing all the comments I have nothing else to say but “We” agree! Won was in my class at PCOM and my husband an upper year. We will always remember his positive outlook, great sense of humor and his ability to connect with others. No surprise he was a good doc. His wife is
a talented woman, and he was very proud of her beautiful family Christmas cards.
Most of all he loved his daughter too, and was excited for her acceptance to PENN
( University of Pennsylvania). He will be missed.!!!! Fran and Jack Kelly

  56. Dear Mrs Kim and Family

I am so saddened at the loss of your husband, my friend. I worked for Dr Scott Dorin and looked forward to hearing his voice whenever he called the office. He was also my eye Dr. The very best I might add!! I love you Dr Kim and will miss you!

  57. I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Kim. He was a wonderful, caring doctor with a good sense of humor. He did two eye surgeries on my mother and she did fantastic! He treated her with compassion and made her feel comfortable. He was her favorite doctor. I also was treated by Dr. Kim for a scratched cornea. He treated us both like family. I remember taking Mother to see him after his daughter was born. (Mother had missed a few years of appointments due to health issues.) He immediately wanted to show us pictures of what had happened in his life since the last visit. He showed us a picture of his beautiful wife and daughter. He said that they referred to his young daughter as “Beauty & the Beast”. The Shoals has lost an amazing doctor and friend. He will be deeply missed. My heartfelt sympathy goes to his family and extended family.

  58. Dear Ji Soo and family,
Our hearts go out to all of you. May God give you comfort and peace during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

  59. Soo Mee and family – My thoughts are with you as your journey through the loss of your loving husband and father. I met Wonsuck at Ben Franklin Elementary School and our friendship continued as classmates at Indiana Area High School in Pennsylvania. We had the largest class ever to graduate from the school and our class, the IAHS Class of 1979, were very blessed to have Won as our classmate and friend. In school, Wonsuck was always friendly, smiling and happy! He was involved in so many different things and was so kind to everyone. Those who had him as their doctor must have been so very blessed! His classmates all got to see him at our last reunion a couple years ago. The pictures are being posted on our FB page and we are all remembering and missing our fun, kind, loving classmate! It was my honor to know Won and to graduate with him among all our other classmates! Soo Mee, You were blessed with him in your life and I send my prayers and heartfelt wishes for peace in your hearts knowing Won is with our Father and that we will all see him again one day. God be with you all.

  60. So suck will be missed he was a great person, I went to school with him since grade school. I am so sorry for you loss Soo Mee and Family you are all in my thoughts and prayers. He had so many friends and as I read all the comments will be missed by all.

  61. Won was a wonderful physician and an amazing person. I knew Won for 20 years on a personal and professional level. He is one of my favorite people of all time! Such a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit. Always happy with a great attitude to brighten the day.
I will miss him coming into my operating room and telling me corny jokes. Or telling me about how proud he is of his daughter’s latest acheivements. Or complaining about some latest political issue . Or talking about baseball. And always asking first about my kids and family. He liked to call me up to talk about interesting patients. Always wanting to do the best for them.
Won was a great ambassador to the medical profession. Volunteering free medical care to the less fortunate, teaching medical students, serving on the state board, and working at the federal level in support of ophthalmology.
Farewell to my friend and colleague. I love you and will miss you.

  62. Like all IAHS classmates I feel honored to have known Wonsuck since elementary school. He was a special person inside and out and always had a smile for everyone. My sincere condolences to the family. Cherish all the great memories.

  63. Dr Kim was the best. I needed special attention to my eyes. I received that and gained a special friend. Only Dr. Kim could see me through cataract surgeries and four cornea transplants. He was so eager to give me good eyesight that he came early from a vacation to perform a replacement cornea. He loved his daughter. As he often mentioned her progress in choosing a university and he often mentioned how blessed he was to have a wonderful wife. I admired him as he professed his love for the Lord. I always left his office knowing that I would have a good day as we joked and laughed through the whole appointment. May the Lord be with you and may you Rest In Peace when not entertaining in Heaven.

  64. I knew Dr. Kim as an eye doctor and also in my profession. I had great respect for him on both levels. He had a great sense of humor. He will be missed, praying for the family, associates and all who knew and loved him.

  65. Even now as I write this, I feel a bit numb as I am extremely saddened… Wonsuck was the uncle I always looked forward to seeing over weekends when I was young. He was always calm, collected and sincere, and only had the nicest things to say. I still remember vividly him commenting on my Sunday church fashion (which made my day) and all the dad jokes which I now totally get.
I knew Wonsuck uncle was a great, great and great man so I always looked up to him as a kid; after reading some comments here it seems like I wasn’t wrong At All. I can clearly see he impacted so many lives and his work and legacy is very inspirational to me and tremendously respectful.
To Jisoo, I read somewhere you enjoy travelling new places? Well if you ever decide to visit Australia, you know my doors are wide open for you.
Oh I miss you so much…Wonsuck uncle I truly hope to see you again when the time comes. Until then, rest in peace up in the Heaven.

  66. I was a patient of Dr. Kim What a kind, compassionate, calm and efficent specialist he was!!! He will be greatly missed and always remembered!!Deepest Sympathy!!

  67. The Shoals has lost a treasure. Dr Kim was the best example of a caring professional. He has treated our family for years and was always kind and considerate. He was a great mentor to our daughter, Heather, while she was in medical school. Always proud to speak of his wife and daughter. Our deepest sympathy is with them.

  68. Our hearts are broken at hearing of Won’s passing. Soo Mee and Ji Soo, we are fervently praying for you both. May God’s Presence be near you and may He meet your every need.❤️

  69. I was so shocked to hear of Dr. Kim’s passing. He has been my family’s doctor for 15 years, and did surgery on my right eye a few years ago. He was always so kind and caring – one of the absolute best doctors of any specialty I’ve ever had. Can’t imagine trusting my corneas to anyone else. I feel like I watched his daughter grow up over the years as he always had a recent photo of her in his office.
I saw a specialist in Birmingham once who told me there was nothing any ophthalmologist in the state could do for me that Dr. Kim couldn’t do just as well or better. He was that good, and the Shoals was so very fortunate to have him.
Much love, sympathy, and prayers to Dr. Kim’s wife and daughter, and his entire extended family. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

  70. So saddened by his loss and so glad to read all of these memories. His versatility and outgoing nature stood out in high school. He loved music (as a singer) and sports (especially as a fleet-footed, smooth-fielding 2nd baseman) in equal measure, and had an astonishing ability to connect with almost anyone and start up and develop a conversation that went well beyond the usual courtesies.

We reconnected at the 40th HS reunion, and he made a point of revisiting my parents, and others he knew in town, after the event. What became clear was that those qualities still remained, and then some: deepened by his love of family.

When we talked over the past year, he became most animated and able to forget about his struggles when he talked about his wife and daughter. My heart goes out to them, and to his sisters and mother and father whom I knew growing up. Thanks to them I developed a life-long love of Be Bim Bop and Kim Chee, among other things. Forever grateful that I knew him.

  75. Every year around the second week of April, the students of PCOM Georgia get to meet Dr. Kim as he shares with them his experience. Every year, I have to make sure I reach out to Dr. KIm to make sure the date is marked on his calendar. 2020 was different. Dr. Kim reached out and apologized for having to cancel his series of lectures due to his health concern. During his illness, his concern was the students. In class, he was a patient, eloquent, funny, and a first-class teacher and mentor. His students loved him. I’m saddened by his passing. May his memory be eternal.

  78. I met Won in 1992 when I had moved to Florence for work just starting out in my career. He had just moved there as well. I had recently lost my father and Won was a several years older and became a close friend, mentor in many ways, and I looked up to him and admired how he was managing his new life and relationships in Florence. Such a gift was his friendship. He was such a kind and warm person. I admired him for his decency and commitment to his patients. I will miss our meaningful conversations. We always got right into discussing what’s important in life, how we were navigating life, and our calls always ended with “I love you”. I will carry his spirit and what I learned from him always.

  79. Recently moved back to Florence and found out about Dr. Kim’s passing. We were patients of his for many years and he was one of the best of the best. He was kind, funny, and just a beautiful soul. He will be truly missed and all who knew him are better people because of knowing him. Our prayers go out to his wife and family.

  81. Dr Kim was a person we have known since he was a child in Indiana. He was always a person who was thoughtful and kind to others. Dr Kim was an outstanding student and a good friend to all his fellow students. He worked hard at school and excelled in all his efforts.
We were privileged to have him as a student and to know him as a person. May God bless his soul and consolidate all those who loved him.

  82. Wonsuck was a great colleague and friend (I met him as a medical student in 1988 in Dayton, Ohio). I am now a better ophthalmologist because of his love for mankind, patients, and ophthalmology. I had the privilege to train with him for one month, and had a great impact on me personally and professionally. So much above has been said and ALL completely true. We lost a great one on Earth, but the Heavens sure have received one of the best, ever. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family. May his Memory be for a Blessing…

  83. Dr. Kim was an excellent physician and he was a friend. I surely will miss him, and wish peace and comfort to his family, and to his colleagues and friends at Florence Ophthalmology.

  84. I only recently learned of Dr Kim’s passing. I met him two years ago when he operated on my cataract. We had just moved into the area and I found him to be an exceptional doctor and person. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. I’m sure he will be missed by you and all that loved him.

  85. I am heart broken. I just now found out about Wonsuck. Our families grew up together. There were 4 children in each of our families. My doubles tennis partner was his sister, Ryowon. I’m desperately trying to find Ryowon or Ryomin to talk to. I have a number for Mrs Kim, his mother. I will try that number this weekend. It’s just my 2 sisters and me left. We want to extend our condolences. We love you Kim family and wish we could have gotten to know Wonsuck’s wife and family.
